When artist B.J.O. Nordfeldt (1878–1955) relocated to Lambertville, New Jersey, in 1937, he faced a difficult transition marked by periods of isolation and depression. Through heartfelt letters and whimsical sketches sent to Emily Abbott—his former student at the Minneapolis School of Art, close confidante, and eventual wife—Nordfeldt documented his frustrations, disappointments, and occasional triumphs as he adjusted to his new surroundings.
