Mark Thomas Gibson’s exploration of American culture is shaped by his multifaceted perspective as an artist—as a Black man, a professor, and a student of American history. Drawing on the rich tradition of history painting alongside the bold, graphic style of comic books, Gibson examines contemporary politics and national identity. His use of large-scale compositions, vivid colors, and monumental figures—hallmarks of Western history painting—serves to elevate everyday struggles for freedom.
Gibson has four works featured in the current exhibition, The Crossing: Picturing the American Revolution. Join him for an engaging and insightful talk about his art and creative process.
