Cultural Expression Through Textiles

DATE: Wednesday 11/5/25   TIME: 1:00pm - 2:00pm

Join Assistant Curator Abi Lua as she explores the intricate world of textile-making and the rich cultural influences that shape it. From the geometric elegance of Indo-Islamic architecture to the vibrant motifs of South Asian embroidery, artists like Anila Quayyum Agha draw deeply from their heritage to create works that are both contemporary and rooted in tradition.

Textiles across cultures are more than just decorative—they are vessels of identity, storytelling, and craftsmanship.
The process of making textiles is equally shaped by culture—whether it's the communal dyeing rituals in West Africa, the meditative hand-stitching in Japan, or the storytelling embedded in Andean weaving. Materials, tools, and techniques are passed down through generations, often with spiritual or symbolic significance.

Abi Lua will guide us through these global influences, highlighting how artists today honor tradition while innovating with new materials and forms. Whether you're an art lover, educator, or maker, this session offers a rich tapestry of insight into the global language of textiles.
