On Christmas night in 1776, George Washington and his troops crossed the icy Delaware River to launch a surprise attack on Hessian forces stationed in Trenton, New Jersey. The victory marked a pivotal turning point in the American Revolution and became one of the most iconic events in American history. Over the centuries, artists have commemorated the crossing and its enduring connection to independence through paintings, prints, sculptures, and public installations. But what really happened that historic night, and how is the event remembered today?

Join Kimberly McCarty, Curator with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, as she explores the history behind Washington's daring crossing. She will also discuss the origins of the modern-day reenactment, including how and why this cherished tradition began and continues to honor the legacy of the American Revolution.

A graduate of Drexel University, Kimberly McCarty has been the Museum Curator for Washington Crossing Historic Park since 2011. Prior to that she held the position at Pennsbury Manor and was the Museum Planning Coordinator for the Museum of the American Revolution.  Throughout her career she has honed her interpretive skills by developing exhibitions, interpretive plans, public tours, and other specialized programming.
