Immerse yourself in the rich tradition of Pennsylvania Impressionism through this plein air painting master class led by renowned artist and educator Joseph Sweeney. Inspired by the celebrated Pennsylvania Impressionist works in the Michener Art Museum’s collection, participants will explore the techniques, themes, and artistic vision that defined this influential movement while creating their own paintings on location.

This hands-on weekly seminar combines art history, observation, and practice. The series begins with a guided tour of the Michener Art Museum, where participants will closely examine works from the collection and gain insight into the Pennsylvania Impressionist School. When available, select works not currently on display may be brought into the galleries for special viewing.

Subsequent sessions will be held either in the Museum classroom or at carefully selected outdoor locations, allowing artists to paint directly from nature in the plein air tradition. Landscape painting topics will include color mixing to achieve a sense of light and air, capturing time of day, compositional fundamentals, and sound painting practices for oil, acrylic, or pastel painting. Through demonstrations, individualized instruction, and group discussion, Joseph Sweeney will guide participants in developing their technical skills, artistic confidence, and appreciation for the enduring legacy of Pennsylvania Impressionism.
