The Art of Response: Ekphrastic Writing

DATE: Wednesday 9/16/26   TIME: 1:00pm - 3:00pm

One art form can spark another, creating powerful and sometimes unexpected connections. Join us for our new program, The Art of Response: Ekphrastic Writing, and explore how visual art can inspire the written word.

Ekphrastic writing invites you to describe, interpret, or reflect on a work of art, building a bridge between imagery and language. While often associated with poetry, this program welcomes all forms of creative expression—poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction alike.

In this workshop, participants will use visual art as a catalyst for their writing. This session will focus on the piece Miracles and Glory Abound by vanessa german that is on display as part of the exhibit, The Crossing: Picturing the American Revolution. The program begins in the galleries with a brief presentation by a Michener docent or staff member, offering insight into the artist and their work. From there, workshop leaders from the Volta Center for Writing Arts will guide participants through generative writing prompts designed to spark creativity, break through blocks, and develop vivid, sensory-rich language.

Volta Center for Writing Arts

The Volta Center was created by Poet Laureate Community Projects, a committee established in 2021 by a group of former Bucks County Poets Laureate. Volta works to expand writing opportunities for all writers and collaborative artists in Bucks County and the greater Philadelphia region. More information on the organization can be found on their website.
