WATERCOLOR: UNDERSTANDING COLOR

In this class, you’ll explore color theory, mixing colors, using a color wheel, and creating harmonious palettes. Through a series of guided exercises and paintings, you’ll gain confidence in choosing and mixing colors while learning how to make your paintings more vibrant, expressive, and cohesive. 

All materials needed to participate in class are provided. For students who wish to bring their own supplies, or would like to work at home, please see the suggested supply list below: 

Paints 

• Student-grade or artist-grade watercolor paints (tubes or pans) 

Suggested Starter Colors 

• Cadmium Red 

• Rose Madder 

• Ultramarine Blue 

• Cerulean Blue 

• Lemon Yellow 

• Yellow Ochre 

• Sap Green 

• Burnt Sienna 

• Burnt Umber 

•  Payne’s Gray 

Brushes 

• Synthetic watercolor brushes (both round and flat brushes in a variety of sizes 

Watercolor Paper 

• (Sizes: 9x12 and/or 11x14) 

• 140 lb / 300 gsm 

• Cold press (recommended for beginners) 

• *100% cotton paper for those who want a professional upgrade 

Drawing Supplies 

• HB pencil 

• Kneaded eraser 

Palette & Accessories 

• Palette with mixing wells (plastic or ceramic) 

• Water containers 

• Paper towels or cotton rag 

• Painter’s tape or artist’s tape 

• Spray bottle (for keeping paints moist and creating soft effects) 

Optional Extras 

• White gouache or Ink (for highlights) 

• Masking fluid (to preserve the white of the paper) 

• Table salt (for texture effects) 

• Old card or pallet knife for scraping
